Southampton will be looking to put their disappointing Premier League draw with Brighton behind them when they take on Wolves at Molineux tomorrow.
Mark Hughes’ men threw away a 2-0 lead last Monday when Brighton travelled to St. Mary’s, and Ryan Bertrand has since come out to describe the upcoming clash against Wolves as a must win game.
The Breakdown
Speaking to the Southern Daily Echo (via the Birmingham Mail), Bertrand said: “Games against teams like Wolves, teams outside the top six, are ones we have to win.
“We should be well in the running for winning that second league so to speak.”
While Bertrand is probably accurate with his assessment that Southampton are one of the stronger teams outside of the Premier League top six, the Saints are in for a rude awakening if they show any signs of complacency against Wolves tomorrow.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side may be a newly promoted one but, on paper, they look very strong and more than capable of putting Southampton to the sword.
Results have certainly picked up for the Saints this month, but performances have still be unconvincing in parts with the collapse against Brighton being the perfect example.
Danny Ings’ return to the squad following his ineligibility to play versus parent club Liverpool last weekend will come as a massive boost given how he has started this season.
But by no means is tomorrow’s game one Southampton should be walking into thinking it is a great chance to pick up three points.
With how Wolves have begun this campaign, it is arguably the hardest fixture Hughes’ men could have asked for outside the top six.
