Former England star John Fashanu is suing Nigerian police after he was arrested and released on bail over a land dispute.

Former England star Fashanu was arrested in Nigeria over a land dispute, according to the . The 62-year-old is said to be suspected of criminal conspiracy, threat to life, intimidation and trespass. He has also been accused of obtaining by false pretence. Fashanu denies the claims and is suing the police force that arrested him.

Fashanu is said to have accused cops in Nigeria, where he now lives, of wrongly arresting him, his wife, and his lawyer. Fashanu claims the entire case is a civil matter, as investors had agreed to pay him £500,000 for a portion of land. After the investors allegedly sent workmen to build a perimeter fence, Fashanu and his lawyer investigated and were arrested by police who were protecting the workers. He claims he was wrongly arrested, and alleges "arrest, detention and inhuman treatment" for "about three hours".
